Most Popular Genre Of Music

The most popular genre of music used to be rock. From Elvis Presley to the Beatles, rock was the music genre of choice for decades. But today, hip-hop and rap is on top, at least with younger generations. This doesn’t mean that rock is dead, no way! There are plenty of young bands keeping their genre relevant.

In this article, I will talk about “Most Popular Genre Of Music”. Let’s start.

Pop

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the Western world during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many diverse styles. “Pop” and “rock” were roughly synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they became increasingly differentiated from each other.

Pop and rock were both essentially youth genres, which meant they were often one and the same thing. For most of rock’s history, it was not considered commercially viable to release singles (i.e., 45 RPM records). The dominant medium for releasing pop music had been the long-playing album since the late 1950s; however, by 1968 sales of singles began overtaking sales of LPs, and by 1969 singles surpassed albums as the most popular format.

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the Western world during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many different styles. “Popular music” is often defined as having a mainstream appeal with mass appeal and/or being particularly aimed at a youth market. It may also be characterized by being written by professional songwriters, rather than amateurs or adaptations from other sources.

The term ‘popular’ in popular music has been used to describe several genres that have become well-known, including pop, rock and roll, R&B, hip hop, country and dance. The most commercially successful pop artists are generally those who are best able to translate their personal success into sales of recordings and live performances.

Rock

Rock (also called Rock and Roll) is a genre of music with its own distinctive features. A rock song is typically an uptempo song that is heavy on guitars and drums, with a strong rhythm section. The lyrics often deal with rebellion, sex, and drugs.

Rock has been around since the 1950s, and was first defined by Bill Haley and His Comets’ song “Rock Around the Clock.” The genre was popularized by Elvis Presley’s 1956 recording of “Hound Dog,” and it quickly grew in popularity throughout the years.

The rock genre of music is one of the most popular genres in the world. Rock music began in the mid-1950s when African-American musicians took the blues and rhythm and blues songs they loved and added a faster beat. The result was rock ‘n’ roll. The music spread quickly, especially after Elvis Presley’s appearance on television in 1956.

Rock music became popular among young people everywhere. Many early rock songs were about cars, fast driving and having fun.

In the 1960s, some rock bands started using electric guitars instead of acoustic ones. They also experimented with new sounds such as feedback from old amplifiers and recorded their music on reel-to-reel tape machines rather than vinyl records. These bands are called psychedelic rockers because of the crazy sounds they made!

Hip-Hop & Rap

Hip-Hop & Rap has been the most popular genre of music since its creation in the 1970s. It was pioneered by artists like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who used turntables to manipulate their voices and mix different samples together. That’s why it’s called “rap.”

In today’s world, hip-hop is one of the most versatile genres out there. There are so many different sub-genres that you can find almost anything you want: from mainstream pop to underground rap. Some of your favorites might include Drake or Kendrick Lamar (both are huge names in hip-hop).

Hip-Hop & Rap is also a very diverse genre of music because it encompasses everything from rock to pop, jazz, blues and even country. The term “hip-hop” actually comes from an old slang term for heroin dealers in lower Manhattan that would hang around street corners in New York City back in the 1970s.

Country

Country music is a genre of United States popular music that originated in the southern United States in the 1920s. It takes its roots from traditional folk music, but is often put through a rock and roll filter, and has a sound heavily influenced by blues, jazz and bluegrass.

Country artists generally perform solo or with bands; country music is largely focused on songwriting and vocal harmony. The main instrumentation is guitar, banjo, fiddle and steel guitar (called “pedal steel”), with lesser roles for other stringed instruments such as dobro or mandolin; saxophones are less common but commonly used as well. The dominant male vocalist is usually called a “lead” singer (or “lead”, colloquially) because of his greater prominence in live performances; however female singers also have significant roles in many forms of country music, including singing lead and backing vocals.

Country music is a genre of American popular music that originated in the southern United States in the 1920s. It takes its roots from the southeastern genre known as folk music and includes bluegrass, gospel, and other related genres.

Country music often features fiddle, steel guitar and banjo on both acoustic and electric guitars. Some well-known country musicians include Bill Anderson, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.

R&B

R&B, which stands for rhythm and blues, is a genre of music that emerged in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It combines elements of jazz, blues, gospel and pop music.

R&B is one of the most popular genres of music today. Many artists have had number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Some examples are Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé Knowles.

R&B is a genre of popular music that originated in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The term was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when “urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat” was becoming more popular. By the mid-1950s, the term R&B came to mean blues-based music. After that time, the term lost its original meaning and became associated with any popular black music of any style.

R&B can be traced back to its African-American roots which developed in the Southern U.S., starting with gospel and blues songs that were brought to life by artists such as Bessie Smith, who developed an edgy style on her 1926 version of “Downhearted Blues.” Other notable pre-1955 R&B artists include Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and Fats Domino.

Folk

Folk music is a broad genre of music that was developed in many countries, beginning in the mid-19th century. The earliest traditional folk music styles were associated with a specific geographic location and were passed down orally, or aurally. Folk music includes both traditional music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival. The term originated in the 19th century but is often applied to music that is older than that.

Folk music generally has “traditional” elements, but it also includes contemporary music styles often associated with folk, such as English, Irish and Scottish traditional music. It is often distinguished from other genres by its lyrics, which are often of a political or social nature. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted via an oral tradition; as music with unknown composers; as songs passed down through generations by word of mouth; and as publicly performed art music without reference to an established text or author.[1] This last definition enables a large number of song types to be included under the umbrella term “folk”, which are not all strictly parlour songs on parlours but which all have different origins or histories that may be obscured by their similarity to each other.

Jazz

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as “America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime, as well as European military band music. Intellectuals around the world have hailed jazz as “one of America’s original art forms”.

The history of jazz from its early development to the present day is considered to be part of American culture and history as well as an art form that expresses ideas through sounds.

Heavy Metal

The Heavy Metal genre is the most popular music genre in the world. Heavy metal’s popularity has increased over time, and it has become an international phenomenon.

Heavy Metal Genre History

The term heavy metal was first used in the 1960s, when it was used to describe a new type of rock music that was louder and harder than other forms of rock. In 1970s, it began to be used as a way to describe a sub-genre of rock known as heavy metal. This sub-genre is characterized by distortion and loud volume levels, as well as intense guitar riffs.

Today, many different forms of heavy metal exist. Some examples include: thrash metal, death metal, black metal and doom metal.

Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics. In the mid-1970s Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the new wave of British heavy metal such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”.

Edm

EDM (also known as Electronic Dance Music), is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the mid to late 1980s. It has since become a dominant form of music in the United States and around the world. The genre has been shaped by various musical influences, including disco, house, techno, dubstep and hip hop.

EDM producers often use synthesizers and digital sampling to create sonic textures that are unusual for popular music. Very early EDM producers such as Afrika Bambaataa were also influenced by Kraftwerk’s pioneering work in electronic music. Some of the most notable influencers include French house producer David Guetta and German producer/DJ Paul van Dyk, who both helped to popularize the genre with their respective albums “Just a Little More Love” (2002) and “The Politics of Dancing” (2004). In recent years, EDM has become mainstream pop music worldwide.

EDM is a music genre that stands for electronic dance music. It is a type of electronic music that originated in the 1980s. It has been around for decades, but it was not until recently that it became popular.

EDM artists take influences from many different genres, including rock, pop and hip hop. The result is a very energetic style of music that has become extremely popular in recent years.

The most popular EDM artist today is Skrillex, who has sold over 10 million albums worldwide. Other popular EDM artists include Deadmau5 and Kaskade.

Most Popular Genre Of Music Edm

Soul

Soul music is a subgenre of popular music. It originated around the mid-1950s in African American communities in the United States, where it evolved from gospel and rhythm and blues (R&B). Soul music has been described as an expression of the soul that delineates or embodies the full range of human emotion, including joy, sadness and loneliness.

Soul music can be characterized by any or all of the following: a call-and-response between the lead vocalist and the chorus; a steady beat; strong roots in gospel and R&B; and lyrics that tend to focus on personal issues and relationships.

Soul music is a music genre that originated in the United States in the late 1950s. It combines elements of gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening in the United States, where record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement. Soul also became popular around the world, directly influencing rock music and creating subgenres including funk, boogie, disco and rap.

In contemporary popular music, it may be considered mainstream if it has substantial commercial success while retaining a (or the) primary function of entertainment; otherwise it is considered an obscure genre outside of mainstream culture. The term may also be used with regard to non-musical performances and events intended for black audiences.

Funk

Funk is a music genre that originated in African-American communities in the mid-late 1960s when African American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B). Like much of African-inspired music, funk typically consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves.

Funk uses the same richly colored extended chords found in bebop jazz, such as minor chords played on electric guitar and bass lines played by an organ trio or horn section using full chords instead of single notes. Unlike much white-performed rock and roll at the time, funk songs used heavier bass lines and stronger drum beats to create a thick sound. The electric guitar was often distorted through a fuzzbox to create even more sustain. Heavy funk was played by bands such as Sly and the Family Stone (early), Parliament-Funkadelic(later) and The Meters.(later), James Brown & The JBs (later), The Ohio Players (later), Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band(later), Larry Graham & Graham Central Station(later) and Prince (early).

Reggae

Reggae music is a style of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular musical genres reggae fusion, reggaeton, and dancehall.

Reggae is said to be the oldest form of Jamaican popular music, with early styles revolving around simple melodic dance songs, while later styles incorporated elements of rocksteady and ska. Reggae lyrics are generally characterized by themes of love and social concern, and also by a focus on political issues.

The earliest recording of reggae was made by studio band The Skatalites for producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd at Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica on 22nd February 1966. This set the template for many subsequent recordings. The genre was based around rhythmic vocal harmony parts or chants (often called “riddims”), played on piano or synthesizer organ, over simple chord patterns, usually played on electric guitar or drums, with another instrument improvising melodies and counter-melodies. This approach became more codified after 1968 when Eric Donaldson released “Cry Tough”, which became the first major hit single of the era using this style; other artists quickly followed suit with their own versions.

Disco

Disco is a genre of dance music containing elements of funk, soul, pop and salsa. The genre first evolved in the mid-to-late 1960s, with many stations playing a mix of soul and pop music.

Disco was the last major popular dance form of the 1970s, but it had outlived most other genres by the end of that decade. It died down in the early 1980s as new wave and synthpop revived rock’s mainstream popularity. Disco spawned many subgenres including Italo disco, Euro disco and boogie.

Disco is a music genre of the 1970s. Disco provides a dance-oriented format which features a greater focus on musicianship and live bands to the detriment of electronic instruments and studio editing. Disco is a danceable style of popular music that originated in the United States during the late 1960s. It combined various black music styles including soul, funk, R&B, and pop with Latin, rock and roll, and jazz elements (especially horns).

Disco was closely associated with the rise of the multiple single format in the U.S., which was designed to accommodate the needs of automated jukeboxes. The first dance floor hit to use this format was “A Fifth of Beethoven” by Walter Murphy (June 1976). By 1977, most major U.S. cities had discos from which DJs would play danceable songs all night long.

Punk Rock

Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Rooted in 1960s garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They typically produced short or fast-paced songs, with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through informal channels.

In 1977, Patti Smith helped spur the punk movement when she became the first woman signed to a major label (Arista) to release an album with an overtly feminist message: “Horses”. The following year on her follow up album Easter she wrote a song called “Rock N Roll Nigger” which talked about how some people get mad at you if you use that word but then they say nigger all the time so who’s really being racist?

Classical

Classical music is a broad and expansive genre that encompasses many subgenres.

Classical music is often still considered to be the most prestigious of all forms of music. It has been around for centuries and has developed from many different genres of music, including folk, popular and religious music.

Classical music can be divided into two main types: concert and opera. Concerts are often performed by a small group of musicians, who play together on stage. Operas are staged productions, with singers and dancers performing in front of an audience.

Classical music is a broad range of art music that originated in Western culture. It has been defined in several ways: as “a musical tradition”, “a general style” and “a common practice period”. Classicism is a much older concept than the term classical music, although the two terms are often used interchangeably.

The influence of ancient Greek culture on the Roman Empire was profound, affecting literature, philosophy, art and science. Classical Latin would become the dominant language of Europe for centuries to come. The Renaissance was a period of rapid cultural and scientific progress in Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries. It began as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe. The term Renaissance is an English word meaning “rebirth” referring to the revival of interest in classical antiquity after the Middle Ages.

House

The most popular genre of music is rock and roll. The second most popular genre is pop, followed by country and rap. Other genres include jazz, folk, classical, electronic and hip hop.

Rock and roll music is a combination of blues and country with a touch of jazz. It was popularized in the 1950s by artists such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. The genre reached its peak in the 1960s when musicians like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were topping charts. Rock music has since been widely criticized for its role in influencing youth culture; however, it remains one of the most popular genres worldwide today.

Pop music is a form of dance-oriented pop music that emerged during the 1970s. It was developed to be more commercially-friendly than other forms of dance music at the time — disco or funk — which often had complicated rhythms that were difficult for non-dancers to comprehend or enjoy listening to. Pop musicians typically use synthesizers or drum machines rather than live instruments to create their songs; however, some groups still use traditional instruments like pianos or guitars alongside their synthesized sounds.

Techno

Techno is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States during the mid to late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of sub-genres have been built.

Techno initially developed from the American house scene before Detroit techno emerged as a distinct genre. Initially popularised around nightclubs in Detroit, its parameters have since become more expansive and it has also developed into various sub-styles or branches including tech house, electro house, ghettotech, hard techno and trance.

The best known are Detroit techno (or “techno proper”) : Moodymann & DJ Rolando , Underground Resistance , Jeff Mills , Carl Craig , Kevin Saunderson , Metro Area , Model 500 / Juan Atkins and others subsequently released on labels such as Warp Records and Drexciya .

Indie Rock

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. In the mid-1980s, the term began to be used to describe the music produced on punk and post-punk labels. Some indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s and 1990s. During the 1990s, Grunge bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden gained popularity. The 2000s saw further mainstream success for indie rock bands, with bands like The Strokes, Interpol and Franz Ferdinand achieving commercial success and recognition.

Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. In the mid-1980s, several British writers began to regularly use the term “indie” to describe the music produced on punk and post-punk labels. Some indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s. During the 1990s, Grunge bands broke into the mainstream, bringing along with them a wave of grunge-influenced bands in a style that became known as alternative rock. The commercial success of these bands paved the way for major label interest (and major label money) in alternative rock. At this time, indie rock began to be seen as a distinct genre, with its own musical characteristics.

Most Popular Genre Of Music Indie Rock

Grunge

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s. The American music press initially used the term “grunge” to describe alternative rock bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden, which formed in Seattle, Washington and Aberdeen, Washington respectively.

Grunge artists were generally characterized by their reluctance to engage in promotional activities such as music videos and interviews, or by their rejection of the mainstream music industry. Grunge songs were often sung by singers who screamed rather than sang.

Grunge lyrics also often focused on topics such as social alienation and apathy.

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle’s independent record label Sub Pop and the region’s underground music scene. By the early 1990s its popularity had spread, with grunge bands appearing in California, then emerging in other parts of the United States and in Australia, building strong followings and signing major record deals.

Grunge was commercially successful in the late 1990s; however, many grunge bands were dropped by their record labels by the end of that decade. The main reasons for this are speculated to be an oversaturation of market and a lack of interest among younger music fans who were not raised with it. Grunge became a major flavor of alternative rock in the 1990s. Although most grunge bands had disbanded or faded from view by the late 1990s, they influenced modern rock music as a genre that combined elements of punk rock, heavy metal, hard rock and psychedelic rock into a dirty sound that made use of heavy guitar riffs and melodic singing styles on top of distorted basslines with lyrics that were often angst-ridden and introspective.

Ambient

Ambient music is a genre of music that focuses on creating an atmosphere through the use of an ever-changing and usually very soft combination of instruments and sounds. Ambient music may be instrumental, but it is usually non-danceable.

Ambient music is often associated with environmentalism, space exploration and relaxation, but there are also more active subgenres such as progressive trance.

Ambient music is often confused with other genres such as atmospheric rock and symphonic rock, but these are different styles with their own characteristics.

Ambient music is a genre of music that focuses on tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. Ambient music often lacks a beat, and it can be instrumental or vocal. The genre began as a form of electronic music in the 1970s, but it has since developed into an amalgamation of different styles.

Ambient music uses electronic sounds to produce a floating, atmospheric soundscape without any obvious melody or rhythm. It’s intended to be heard as background noise while you’re doing other things. For example, you might play this kind of music in the background while you work or study so that it doesn’t distract you from your work, but it provides some pleasant background noise that makes the room feel more comfortable and relaxing.

Gospel

Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Most of those churches used a loose living rhythm. The origin of today’s modern gospel music was developed during the American Civil War (1861-1865) by gospel singers who emphasized dramatic expression through their voices. They popularized “sanctified” church singing styles such as quartet singing, which used harmonic accompaniment (a form of call-and-response) that became a mainstay in gospel music.

Latin Music

Latin music is a genre of music that originated in Latin America. It was developed by the Spanish, Portuguese and French colonialists who brought African slaves to their colonies in the Caribbean and South America. The slaves combined their native musical styles with European ones, creating a new form of music that is now known as Latin music.

The most popular genres of Latin music include:

Bossa nova, which originated in Brazil;

Salsa and mambo from Cuba;

Reggeaton from Puerto Rico;

Cumbia from Colombia;

Cha-cha-cha from Mexico; and

Merengue from Dominican Republic.

Latin music is a broad range of popular music styles generally originating in Latin America and the Spanish language. Latin music can be fused with other genres, such as rock, R&B, and salsa and can be sung by performers of all races.

The term “Latin” has been used to describe different genres of music over time. The music that most people today would recognize as “Latin” came about as a result of the influence of European culture on the Spanish colonizers during the 16th century.

Music from Spain was very popular in Latin America during this time period because it was an important part of their heritage. Spanish colonizers brought their culture with them when they settled in areas like Mexico, Peru and Argentina.

During this time, the indigenous people were not allowed to practice their traditional beliefs or customs under Spanish rule. But music became an important outlet for expressing their feelings about living under foreign rule and oppression by using it as a form of resistance against the Spanish government and church.

Grime

Grime music is a genre of music that emerged in London in the early 2000s. It developed out of earlier UK electronic music styles, including UK garage and jungle, and draws on a number of other genres, including hip hop, breakbeat and bassline. Grime often concerns itself with the day-to-day, working-class lives of inner-city youths; many artists have explored the themes of isolation and poverty within the genre. The style initially spread from East London’s underground scene to mainstream popularity, with artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Wiley releasing top ten hits in 2005–06. Although some grime artists have enjoyed commercial success, it has been argued by others that its mainstream popularity has been hindered by a lack of investment from record labels, as well as an unwillingness to engage in major marketing campaigns. However, despite its underground origins, grime has recently found commercial success in both the United Kingdom and United States.

Trap

Trap is a genre of music that originated in the Southern United States. It is typified by rapid, syncopated drum patterns often accompanied by booming snares, high-pitched synthesizers, and “chopped” samples.

Trap music initially developed in the late 1990s in the Southern United States, especially in Atlanta, Georgia. The genre gained mainstream popularity in the mid-2010s with the rise of rappers such as Future, Young Thug and Travis Scott whose songs charted on Billboard Hot 100. The trap sound has been described as a fusion of hip hop and pop music with elements from Southern hip hop subgenres such as crunk and snap. The lyrical content of trap music often revolves around drug use and crime.

Trap is a style of southern hip hop music that originated in Atlanta, Georgia. It is characterized by heavy 808s, chaotic and grungy synths, and triplet rhythms. The term “trap” has also been used for the place where drugs are sold, generally a location in which one would be set up to be robbed by armed robbers.

Trap music’s popularity increased after Kanye West released his song “Champion”, which features a prominent trap beat.

Notable artists include 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, Migos and Gucci Mane.

Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic Rock is a subgenre of rock music that is characterised by distorted and feedback-saturated guitar riffs, loose song structures, and “trippy” lyrics. It was pioneered in the mid 1960s by British acts such as The Beatles, The Who and Pink Floyd.

The first psychedelic rock bands were MC5, Jefferson Airplane and The Doors. Psychedelic rock peaked during the Summer of Love era of 1967-68 before fading out of the mainstream due to a major backlash against its perceived excesses. Psychedelic rock has been revived in recent years with an increased interest in garage rock and 1960s garage punk.

Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that evolved out of the mid-1960s psychedelic music scene in the United Kingdom and the United States. The term “psychedelic” was coined in 1956 by psychiatrist Humphry Osmond for the hallucinogenic properties of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), which was then widely used in research.[2]

Psychedelic means “mind manifesting”. Psychedelic music is intended to alter the listener’s state of consciousness. Typically, this includes a distorted or alternate perception of reality, hallucinations and a general sense of time distortion. Musically, the effects range from subtle to extreme and can include unconventional instruments, distorted electric sounds, elaborate melodies and harmonies as well as extended instrumental solos sometimes using electronic effects pedals.

The genre’s name comes from its association with psychedelic drugs like LSD and psilocybin mushrooms.[3] Many classic psychedelic rock songs are known mainly for their musical sound rather than any specific lyrics or other characteristics.[4]

The earliest known usage of the word “psychedelic” in print is found in a review published in The Times Literary Supplement on September 21, 1966: “In his book about drugs, Mr.

Summary

The most popular genre of music is “pop”. Pop music is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular (and includes both rock and roll and country), while the latter refers to a particular genre. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term ‘pop’ can refer to any kind of popular music, but after the 1960s it came to be used for a particular style of rock music.

The most common definition of pop is a type of rock or roll. It has been described as “the single most influential genre in America”. Although pop has been around for many years, it really took off in the 1950s with Elvis Presley, The Beatles and others. Pop has continued to evolve over time into what we know now as hip hop and rap but still remains very popular today with stars like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber topping charts worldwide.
